Supporting Mental Health Together: A Community Effort
At our school, we understand that mental health is just as important as physical health. Every day, we work to create a supportive environment where everyone, including students, teachers, and families, feels valued, understood, and cared for. Mental health is not just about dealing with challenges when they arise, but about building habits of self-care, kindness, and resilience together.
As families, we play a critical role in fostering positive mental health. This begins by having open conversations with your child about their feelings, helping them recognise that it’s okay to feel sad, worried, or stressed at times. Encouraging regular routines, sufficient sleep, and healthy activities can also make a significant difference.
At school, we teach students about mindfulness, coping strategies, and how to ask for help when needed. However, the most powerful thing we can all do is support one another. Whether by checking in with a friend, offering a kind word, or simply being present.
Together, as a school community, we can create a safe and caring environment where everyone’s mental well-being is a top priority. Let’s keep the conversation going and remind ourselves that mental health is something we all need to care for every day.
Catholic Education Week
Next week is Catholic Education Week. The week will be celebrated with a Mass for north-west schools at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ulverstone, on Tuesday. Our Grade six students will represent Stella Maris Catholic School, followed by a sausage sizzle snack. The Catholic Education Commission Tasmania (CECT) service awards will be held in the Stella Maris St Anne’s Multipurpose Room. These celebrations commence at 4 pm. Our very own Mrs Shabana Cumming will be receiving an Outstanding Service Award.

Reflection on the Sunday Gospel
Lk 11: 1-13
Jesus teaches his disciples about prayer.
When someone in our family is going through a hard time, we can't just sit by and watch. We try to do everything we can to let him or her know that he or she is not alone. Sometimes we even try to find a special gift for him or her—something that will help that person to understand how important he or she is to us. Talk about times in your family when this has happened.
Like a good father, God saw that his children needed help. He decided to offer his beloved children a special gift to reveal his love. What did God give us? Not a thing, but a person—the Father's beloved Son, Jesus. Jesus, in turn, taught us to approach God as we would approach a loving father. He gave us the words of a prayer that we call the Our Father, or the Lord's Prayer.
Read aloud Luke 11:1-13. Talk about how Jesus teaches us to be persistent in prayer. Think of times when family members were persistent about something until they were able to achieve a goal or receive what they sought. Talk about what it means to be persistent in prayer. Help your children understand that prayer is not like sitting on Santa Claus's lap, asking for what we want until we get it. Emphasize that prayer is a way of striving to recognize how God is reaching out to us in love and responding by presenting him with our needs.
Conclude this time together by joining hands and praying the Lord's Prayer.

Man of Shroud Exhibition
We were very fortunate to be able to share a special opportunity for our Grade 5 and 6 students to visit the internationally renowned Shroud of Turin Exhibition, hosted in Tasmania from 22 July to 17 August, thanks to Aid to the Church in Need and the Archdiocese of Hobart.
The Shroud of Turin is believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus, bearing the image of a crucified man. It is one of the most studied artefacts in history, inspiring reflection on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, especially meaningful as we approach the Holy Year 2025, a time of hope and renewal in our faith.
All that attended were in awe of the artefacts presented and were deeply engaged in the learning and conversations that were had.
School Uniform Update
SmartPlay Uniform Update
How fantastic our SmartPlay uniform looks when worn correctly! It’s wonderful to see so many students taking pride in their appearance and representing our school community with confidence and respect.
While we are still within the transition period, we kindly encourage families to follow the SmartPlay School Uniform Guidelines as closely as possible. These guidelines promote consistency and presentation across our school, helping students feel a sense of belonging in a cohesive and supportive learning environment.
A few key reminders:
If students have a school jacket, long sleeved thermals are not permitted under the polo, in accordance with our guidelines. If thermals are worn under the uniform, they must not be visible.
We are currently in the process of adding a long sleeved polo to our uniform.
We’ve now added school-approved hair accessories, available online through Midfords. More items will be added over the coming weeks.
Students are welcome to wear school beanies to and from school, and during recess and lunch in Terms 2 and 3. Please note, beanies should not be worn indoors.
Uniform Shop Update:
The Uniform Shop will now operate by appointment only on Fridays. This change helps us minimise disruptions to other school programs that share the same space.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. The full SmartPlay School Uniform Guidelines are attached for your convenience—please take a moment to read through them and support your child in meeting these expectations.
Kind Regards,
Sue Drane
